Churches

Local churches are backbone of Christian SRE delivery across the state.

It is a means through which local churches can positively contribute to the broader community. We believe that all churches should consider taking up the opportunity that exists in every government school in their area.

Teacher Recruitment

Currently more than 10,000 Christian SRE teachers teach in government schools across NSW every year. But there are still many openings for more teachers. It is a wonderful opportunity to share your life, insights and faith journey with young people.

Some people are hesitant because they don’t feel they could not do it - a classroom can be daunting. But there are training programs available that will not only equip you to teach and enjoy teaching, but will also help you grow in your own knowledge of the Bible.

Your local church minister is generally able to give you the contact information to get involved.

Alternatively if you contact us with your details we can put you in touch with your local Christian SRE provider.

Teacher Training

We believe that current SRE teachers are excellent. And as with any aspect of life, work and ministry it is good to continually refine and hone our skills and capacities. Ongoing training also increases confidence.

A goal of Christian SRE is to build the Bible knowledge and teaching skills of SRE teachers, both existing and new ones.

The following links point to SRE training options that teachers or prospective teachers could consider.

ICCOREIS is the Inter-Church Commission on Religious Education in Schools (NSW) Inc

It exists to facilitate consultation and cooperation between member organisations aimed at the support, promotion and ongoing development of quality Religious Education (General and Special) in government schools in New South Wales, whilst respecting the integrity of each member organisation and other approved providers. It was established by its member churches in 1972.

Teacher Materials

It is important for teachers to use quality teaching materials. Two that we recommend are the Anglican ‘Connect’ and Baptist ‘GodSpace’ curricula. They both teach the key components and themes of the Bible. The lessons can also be adapted for the needs of your class, and they encourage children to apply what they’ve learnt to their own lives.

You can get more information at

ICCOREIS has information on other curricula available.

Advocacy

Write an email to your local member to assure them of your church’s ongoing support for SRE. To make it easy for you we’ve created a page that will send your message to the necessary members, simply follow the instructions.
